Jimmy Styks THRESHER inflatable paddle board

Jimmy Styks Thresher Review – Inflatable Paddle Board

The Thresher from Jimmy Styks is an inflatable paddle board.

While this board is great for beginners, it is by no means a low-quality board.

Inflatable paddle boards may not be the same as regular paddle boards but anything they lack, they definitely make up for by being much easier to transport than hard paddle boards.

How it Performs

If you are an advanced or professional paddle boarder, this may not be the board for you. This board is great for beginners, though. It is extremely stable and this is its top quality when it comes to performance. Getting a board this stable is a good choice if you’ve never paddle boarded before or aren’t comfortable doing it because there is less of a chance you are going to fall or lose your balance while on the board.

As far as responsiveness goes, it is pretty good for that as well. It is easy to control and highly responsive. It does best in flat water, where the control and responsiveness are higher than they are in other types of water.

If you are looking for a board with speed as your top factor, this may not be the one for you. This board is not the fastest by a long shot. However, any beginner should find the speed to be perfectly adequate for their needs and you won’t find yourself feeling as if you’re lacking while you use the board.

As stated, the Thresher can hold up to 270 lbs. It remains firm even when handling its maximum weight and you don’t have to worry about the quality of the ride decreasing as weight increases.

  • You get a full package that includes a fin, backpack, repair kit, pump, coil leash, and a paddle
  • The price
  • The size is great for everyone, especially beginners
  • The PVC used in the board is military-grade
  • The bungee system functions well and is a great addition to the board
  • The traction pad has a great balance of comfort and functionality
  • The board is easy to inflate
  • Very buoyant
  • The included pump is functional but is by no means the best one you can buy. The pumps included with some other inflatable paddle boards are better but it does the job.
  • This is a recreational board. If you want a board that will hold up to frequent paddle boarding at a more advanced level, this isn’t the board for you.
  • Speed. Again, that isn’t the point of this board. This boards is for beginners and stability is typically the most important feature for them.

The Thresher is almost 11’ long, making it a good length for beginners but it can also be used by paddle boarders at any level.

It is 31” wide and 6” thick. The size is one of its top features, honestly.

The board is highly stable and, as stated, the length makes it workable for pretty much anyone regardless of their level.

The width and thickness of this board are some of the best you can come across for comparable boards.

jimmy styks thresher constructionThe board itself is made from high-quality PVC and nylon. There are two layers of PVC, an inner and outer layer.

The inner core is made from nylon dropstitch. Everything is well-constructed and comes together to create a board that is able to withstand high amounts of pressure.

You won’t have to worry about the board breaking during inflation.

The materials that make up this board make it both lightweight and durable, a great combination for any paddle board.

The board itself weighs 24.5 lbs. The weight limit for this board is 270 lbs, making it comparable to other boards of the same size.

The board comes with a detachable central fin for easy steering and navigating.

The fin is large, durable, and fits into the backpack along with all the other items included with the board.

You attached the fin to the board with screws so I would recommend carrying some sort of container for the screws so that you do not lose them. When the fin is on, it is easy to steer and control in the water.

The board features three handles for easy carrying. There is one in the middle of the board and two on the sides, near the upper part of the board.

The handles are sturdy and easy to grip, making carrying the board around while inflated an easy task.

If you need to carry anything on your paddle board, you’re in luck. The kit includes a bungee system. The system has four stainless steel D-rings and a thick, sturdy bungee cord connecting them.

The D-rings and bungee are strong enough to secure coolers, your shoes, or any other gear you might need to keep with you.

Finally, Thresher has a traction pad that makes it comfortable to stand or kneel on the board. The pad makes the board thicker and stiffer than it would be without it.

The pad also goes over the part of the board where the D-rings and bungee are so you won’t have to worry about any of your items slipping out.

What’s Included with the THRESHER

jimmy styks thresher kitWhen you purchase the Thresher, you don’t just get the inflatable paddle board itself.

The package comes with a paddle, hand pump, coil leash, repair kit, and backpack.

The paddle is a 2-piece adjustable one.

It is constructed of aluminum and while it isn’t the lightest paddle, it still floats and the size is great for anyone regardless of height. The grip is T-shaped which makes it comfortable and easy to hold onto.

The hand pump isn’t the most high-tech but it does the job.

Depending on how hard you pump, you can have the board inflated in about five minutes. It’s definitely a pre-boarding workout, though! The pump has a gauge on it and is able to inflate the board to 15 psi.

The repair kit comes with a valve handle and is fairly simple.

You’ll be able to make minor fixes with the kit but for anything substantial, you’ll need to order replacement parts.

The coil leash is 10’ in length, more than enough to ensure that your paddle board stays with you. It is high-quality and comfortable to wear, even for long periods of time.

You don’t want to carry around a deflated paddle board and a pump, of course, so the package comes with a backpack.

The backpack is large enough to carry all of the items included in the kit, not just the paddle board so you will be able to carry everything with you easily. The straps are large, comfortable, and adjustable.

Our RatingOur Rating

You can typically find this entire kit for less than $500. This is, of course, much cheaper than a hard paddle board but even for an inflatable paddle board, the Thresher is a deal. Even more so when you consider everything that comes with it.

First-time paddle boarders will love the Jimmy Styks Thresher. It has a great balance of quality and affordability.

If you are looking for a board with great speed or one that is tough enough to withstand daily advanced paddle boarding, you may not want to look at this board but it shouldn’t be judged harshly for not meeting those requirements.

The Thresher and the included kit is a complete starter package that will get any novice paddle boarder up and paddle boarding for the first time.

I love inflatable paddle boards because they are easy to carry around and also much less expensive than conventional paddle boards.

Price is one of the most important factors for the typical beginner; you don’t want to spend a fortune on something you’re not sure you’re going to end up doing frequently enough to justify the price.
